Art Therapy
In the "All the Bright Places" Project we learned about Art therapy and how it is used to treat mental illness. We created our own art therapy lesson and wrote creative stories about our illness which we made covers for.
As an example art piece for my art therapy lesson I made the piece to the right. My disease, Fatal Familial Insomnia, is, obviously, fatal, so I modeled my lesson after art therapy lessons given to people with terminal cancer. I learned that, for terminal patients, art therapy usually focuses on providing a fun experience and empowering the patient, FFI causes muscle spasms so I made sure to make my activity encourage using large brushes so that the patient wasn't pressured to make something look realistic, rather focus on color and composition. I made sure to follow these guidelines when making my example piece

My creative story is called "The Mysterious Case of the Man who couldn't Sleep". It's a detective story about someone who has FFI during the cold war, when the disease hadn't been discovered yet. The cover is a scene from the book where the "villain" is picking up a briefcase of cash while the protagonists watch. I based the image off of the poster for "The Exorcist" which I think looks really cool.
